Set of gold pieces covering crap EE2011 – 2012
Set of about a dozen crappy oil canvas covered with rich gold acrylics.
I woke up one morning with the urge to cover everything in rich gold colour. I don’t know why, nor how I felt that way, but I began to cover an old canvas of mine, some kind of test I used to do. Suddenly, I was obsessively looking for old canvas, CRAP, to cover all over with gold.
Day after day, in my studio, there was more and more golden canvases reflecting the sunlight. It gave off some sort of mystical atmosphere. And the old crap canvases were given a real chance to live. They were at the same time shiny and off-putting, luminous and blinding. I liked that effect. Bright light opens your heart and gives joy or it can dazzle, blind and disgust.
In the back of my head, I saw all that crap covered with gold that is sold today and that we either love or hate. Same for economics, politics & religion. Decked-out people with the need to cover themselves with sparkling jewels or extravagant outfits. The need to be at all costs more than what we are, and even sometimes think we are divine.
Between real and fake gold.
This is the story of these crappy canvases, covered in gold.
